It is an unfortunate fact of life that there are various life-forms which seem determined to interact with us whether welcome or not.
In the sailing world, one of the major problems in hot countries is the tendency of various kinds of cockroach to find their way aboard, in spite of efforts to avoid actually bringing them on board in cardboard boxes, where eggs are laid in the corrugations, or labels on cans, where the female slips between can and label, to deposit her egg case where the emerging young can live on the glue used to fasten the label, until ready to venture out.
Mosquitoes are another nuisance and can be the source of various most unpleasant illnesses, apart from the obvious malaria.
Flies
can also make life harder to bear.
In some countries spiders can be quite persistent in trying to give your boat the appearance of being neglected and, in others, it is rats which try, by all means, to gain entry to the vessel.
Most sailors have their theories and methods, preventative measures and cures. Have you any hints and tips for those of us who haven't, as yet, succeeded in ridding ourselves of pests?
Tell us all about your experiences and the ways you have tried to get rid of uninvited guests. Which succeeded and which did not?
Do you have specialist knowledge of the habits of these creatures which might help us to understand them better and avoid making them comfortable in our homes? Have you ever returned to your boat to find it overrun? Tell us all about it!
