With the bewildering array of materials to choose from, these days, how do you determine which is the paint for you? What are the advantages of one kind of varnish over another and what about these sophisticated modern coatings on offer now? Which anti-fouling will work for the way you use your boat and which will not suit your hull or your lifestyle?

'St.Peter' with floor paint to hullHRH The King of Redonda
Would you believe that H.R.H. The King of Redonda, (no kidding!) a.k.a. artist Bob Williamson, used industrial floor paint on the hull of his extraordinary vessel, to very good effect. He is astonished by how durable the coating has turned out to be.

The range of colours is, he tells us, "something of a limiting factor". Well, not so as you'd notice! 'Limited' is not a word which springs to the lips when looking for a way to describe  the 'St. Peter's colour scheme! We spotted her across English Harbour, in Antigua, one of the islands we stopped off at in the Caribbean on the way to the Atlantic Ocean, last year, and were absolutely charmed by her and by her royal owner. For more photographs of this working wooden replica, try Carrying On in the All Afloat Section.

Meanwhile, we hope to find your news, views, experiences and opinions relating to coatings of all descriptions, amongst other topics,  in our inbox very soon...why not e-mail us?!
