 The
work on the left is one of many wonderful portraits on whale teeth
produced by Fátima Madruga Gomes. On the right, a caravel at sea, carved
by the same artist.
 On
the left, another caravel, this one by Carlos Machado, who also created
many excellent portraits of legendary yachtsmen, including the first known
solo circumnavigator, Joshua Slocum.
In 1895, Slocum stopped off at Horta, starting a trend
which brought over 1100 yachts to the marina last summer, with even more
expected this year.
 Bernard
Moitessier, included Horta in the ports at which he did not
call during his impromptu non-stop circumnavigation-and-a-half. His
compatriot, Eric Tabarly, tragically lost at sea, bears a poignant
expression of sad resignation.
Carlos Machado also
executed work on huge whale jawbones displayed in the museu. He was
instrumental in the creation of the museum itself, too.

There
is much more to see in Peter's Scrimshaw Museu (in Portuguese there is no
m on the end of the word). A young lady took a group
of us round and gave very interesting short talks on the different
collections gathered in the cabinets. We enjoyed our visit very much
indeed.
