Wish we'd come across
the wonderful "For Dummies" books sooner! There seem to be a great
many, on a huge range of topics. Don't be put off by the connotations of
the series name - it is simply an attempt to reassure, they are for
anyone who doesn't want to be blinded by science but they are
well-written by intelligent individuals.
In spite of having already completed 80% of this website before reading
them, a great deal of useful and interesting information was gained from the first we've acquired,
a lot of which would have speeded up the whole process!
The
ones we bought were 'The Internet For Dummies', by John R. Levine, Carol
Baroudi and Margaret Levine Young - ISBN 1 -56884 - 620 - 7
full of fascinating facts and useful information and 'Windows 98 for
Dummies' by Andy Rathbone - ISBN 0-7645 -0261 - 1, which
is, of course, hopelessly 'old hat' with the progress of Windows since
then! These days it would probably have to be Windows XP For Dummies
for the new Windows user!
These For Dummies books, like others we
have since devoured with pleasure, were light-hearted and easy to read and can be dipped
into endlessly for fun or instruction. A beginner can grasp the simple
explanations just as easily as someone who has a fair smattering of
relevant knowledge.
Ed's Note: Since this was written, we've increased our for Dummies
Library and become Amazon associates, making it easier for us (and you!)
to order the titles we want and get them delivered to where we expect to
be. By shopping through Electronic
Book World you'll also be helping to keep MarineZine online
which, if you are enjoying it, we hope you'll think is a good idea ;-)
